Apponal Tower

guarding the port of Riva del Garda

Apponal Tower of Riva was built in the course of the 13th century using stone slabs of various dimensions reaching the height of 34 meters, it seems on commission of the Bonvicini family, against the will of Prince Bishop Federico Wanga who ordered to break it down, but in the end the tower remained and was sold in property to the same bishop; its initial function was to defend the harbor and the square, as well as shelter for the citizens, the entrance is eight meters high and has thick walls, later defended, became prison; in 1555 it was raised further, while in the twentieth century, during the twenties, it was reworked, removing the onion cover and replacing it with the present one. The tower is equipped with a bell, called “Renga”, which is played only on special occasions. The property is accessible and you can climb up to the top.
