Church S.Stefano

originally from VIII century houses the remains of Saints Benigno and Caro

Church S.Stefano is the ancient parish church and is located in the place where there was a pagan temple that, most likely, was transformed into a place of Christian worship, already in the eighth century we have certainty of the existence of a church dedicated to St. Stephen, in which were placed the remains of the hermits Benigno and Caro. The church was completely restored at the beginning of the 14th century by order of the bishop of Verona Tebaldo III who, with Cangrande della Scala, came here to store the remains of the Saints. In the 18th century the building was completely rebuilt with works from 1729 to 14739. Actually the church has a single nave, a vaulted ceiling with a medallion depicting the glory of St. Stephen of the eighteenth century, has three altars on each side, one for each chapel and the larger centrally; on the first altar on the right is placed a piece depicting the deposition of Christ who suffered many vicissitudes over time surviving the raids of the Napoleonic troops.
