Church San Antonio Abate

  • Churches and sacred
Ponti sul Mincio
Via Guglielmo Marconi 1 - 46040 Ponti Sul Mincio (MN)

The church is named in the documents of the pastoral visits of the bishop of Verona from 1525-1542, listed as “in medio villae consistentem, sine cura” and in 1605, in which it is referred to as a parish church to replace that of San Giacomo.

The church San Antonio Abate, at the beginning of the seventeenth century replaced the previous parish church because it was located lower down near the river Mincio and then subjected to flooding, as well as the village which was then moved to the hills; it was inaugurated in the seventeenth century, later modified in the XIX the apse and in the XX the facade. Inside there is a wooden statue of the Madonna with Child of the eighteenth century which is particularly valuable also for the finishing of the dress, elegantly embroidered; another element of value is a canvas depicting the San Sebastiano and San Francesco with the purgative souls of the Flemish brothers Meves; in the apse there is a shovel dedicated to Saint Anthony with its temptations; an interesting 15th-century fresco probably from the original church, depicting a Crucifixion with Mary and John.
