Church San Giovanni

In Torri del Benaco on Lake Garda

Church San GiovanniĀ is located outside the walls of the village center in the direction of Albisano. The building dates back to the twelfth century and was used as a church for the lazaret and the cemetery, and then closed to worship at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the Napoleonic troops. With the arrangement of the former cemetery area, the church was restored and reopened as an auditorium. Inside, frescoes dating back to the 13th and 16th centuries have been recovered, among the most interesting a crucified Christ, a baptism of Christ and a Madonna on the throne with Child and St. Peter dating to the 14th century; On the west side, close to the entrance is a portion of fresco depicting Sant’Antonio da Padova, probably on invoice of the school of Francesco Morone of the 16th century, also attracts attention to a last dinner of Giovanni da Bardolino of 1330. L The building was closed to worship in 1781 and made state-owned in 1806 with Napoleon, then passed to the Commune.
