Località Eremo, Contrada la Rocca, 1 - 37011 Bardolino (VR)

The hermitage of Camaldolesi , what once was one of the most burning medieval fortresses to be conquered, then transformed into a religious center

Hermitage of Camaldolesi is located on the so-called “Rocca of Garda” of the Friars or Mount San Giorgio and dominates the eastern coast of Lake Garda. In this place there was from 862 to 1532 Church of St. George, then in 1665 some Camaldolese monks who came from the Hermitage of Monte Rua settled there. In 1993 the hermitage has passed under the management of the Benedictine monks of Camaldoli.
In the far X century the Rocca of Garda was the scene of a dramatic story, mixing legend and popular imagination, writers of all time narrated, as Tullio Ferro also writes in his “Seen on Garda lake”: “is the story of Adelaide of Burgundy, that sixteen in Pavia in 947, had married Lothair II, King of Italy. “and that “Berengar II …. advisor to Lothair, …. and probably poisoned the young king, … Adelaide decided to confine in the Rocca di Garda. was in the year 951 ….” The story of Adelaide then continues with a daring escape, according to conflicting versions to the “Isola dei Frati Minori” or to Lugana of Sirmione, and then continue to Castelvenzago and then Canossa; put back on the throne at Pavia, the 951 married Otto of Germany and became queen of Italy and empress of Germany.
